Unique Ship Bound for Miami

Breakaway from New York, or Getaway from Miami.

Spin whatever meaning you wish on those two phrases but in the cruise business it means Norwegian Cruise Line is staking out some territory, which isn't the easiest thing to do on water.

Norwegian's first new ship since the Epic in 2010, the Breakaway, is going to have a distinct New York state of mind. And everything else. The Breakaway will sail year-round from The Big Apple and will attempt to feature all things New York.

The next new ship, the Getaway, will try to do the same thing in Miami. When it starts heading for the Eastern Caribbean on February 1, 2014 — that's three months earlier than expected — the Getaway will "embody a unique Miami vibe."

Hmmm…

Since two-thirds of Miami's citizens claim Spanish as their first language, expect the entertainment slant on the cruise line that celebrates entertainment like no other will be salsa by nature. Meanwhile…will Lebron James be recruited as the ship's Godfather? Are passengers going to enjoy (?) the South Beach Diet? How about David Caruso on stage, as the lead investigator in a CSI game?

South Florida is, of course, the hub of cruising in North America with two other major ports in Fort Lauderdale and Port Canaveral, and Miami is already a city of many cruise ships. What already sets the Getaway apart is that it will replace the Epic as Miami's biggest cruise ship.

What could really set it apart and be a real coup for Norwegian — and don't think this hasn't been on somebody's drawing board — would be for the Getaway to make that first cruise from the U.S. to Cuba.
