64 hours in Las Vegas

After the wedding in Denver, we zipped off to Las Vegas for 2.5 days, courtesy of cheap accommodations man (thanks, Lerrin) and cheap flights via Ted.
It was a hoot — even if we had terrible luck on the tables.
We had pretty much figured out ahead of time what shows and activities we wanted to see/do while we were there. We arrived fairly late Sunday night, and stayed at the Planet Hollywood (otherwise known as the Aladdin).
The first of two shows we had tickets for ahead of time was Cirque du Soleil’s Love, a Beatles homage show. It was almost indescribable — a cavalcade of talented acrobats, dancers, artists coupled with stunning sound, gorgeous, dynamic set work and intense technology. Neither of us has ever seen a Cirque show before, but I would love to see more, if the quality is similar. I especially liked the portrayals of Father Mackenzie and Eleanor Rigby. We chuckled, however, at what a fitting focus for a show it is, marketing-wise. It’s like an arrow straight at the heart of the boomers with the disposable income — and the crowd demographic reflected that.
Regardless of their target market, if you are at all a Beatles fan, this show is amazing, and will not disappoint. And, there isn’t a bad seat in the theatre, so cheap tickets would be fine, though better seats are, well, better.
The second day, we attempted to catch the free shuttle to the Liberace museum. We saw the ass end of the bus and, over an hour later, had not seen it again. So, we scrapped the museum and instead went to the Bodies exhibit at the Tropicana (one of the few casinos to have all-day/night $5 Blackjack tables available, for those interested). Bodies is a presentation of cadavers that have gone through an amazing plastination process, which removes the water from flesh and replaces it with a liquid silicone rubber. The bodies have been dissected, posed, and used in a wide variety of displays. Not for the really squeamish, but is a fascinating look at just how complex the human body is. No photography allowed (which, for $26 a ticket, is crap), but *cough* someone was able to *cough* find a picture of one of the bodies:

There has apparently been some controversy about the acquisition of the cadavers for the exhibit, but the presentation was unbelievably respectful and tasteful — even the section on fetal and neonate physiology, which included specimens of different stages of fetal development.
Finally, Tuesday night, we had tickets to see Lucky Cheng’s “All That Drag” dinner and show, at the Krave Theatre just off Las Vegas Blvd. It was hilarious. The girls in the show, who are also the servers are funny, rude, blunt and a hoot — and pretty damn good looking (mostly), for someone tucking their twig and berries out of sight. The funniest point was when they grabbed a 71-year-old woman there for her birthday, groped the heck out of her, and then made her participate in a pole dancing competition with three other dinner guests. Mondo fun, and exquisite food — almost worth the price of admission in and of itself. Make sure and bring dollar bills for the dancers, and your camera. Hopefully, you can take better pictures than we managed:

Oh, and try booking your tickets through Gold Star Events — we saved 50% off the ticket price when we bought them from Gold Star.
The Blackjack tables were a disaster for us. Frances did better on the penny slots than either of us managed at the tables the entire time. Damn you, Four Queens Casino….

Who’s that girl?

Well, everybody made it home safe and sound from the hospital on Tuesday, finally. For any we haven’t talked to yet, here’s the synopsis of last Friday’s event-filled day. Never let it be said that we do anything the easy way:
5:23 am: Frances wakes up with pain, but it doesn’t really feel like labour
7:00 am: We decide to go in to Fort Frances to get things checked out, anticipating being home by mid-morning. Gareth goes to day care.
7:45 am: Halfway to Fort Frances, things feel a little more like labour. Crap.
8:00 am: Arrive at the hospital, still feeling like labour. Nurse in emergency department says she doesn’t think it’s labour.
8:15 am: Nurse in ER is wrong.
8:30 am: Hospital resource coordinator tells us she’s ordering up the air ambulance to fly us to Winnipeg for the delivery (Fort Frances doesn’t deliver premature babies except in emergencies). We have nothing — no bag, no camera…nothing.
9:50 am: They load us in the ambulance to go to the airport.
10:00 am: The air ambulance is late. We wait at the hospital.
10:20 am: Nurse checks Frances to see how labour is progressing. She’s dilated 2 cm in half-an-hour. “You’re not going to Winnipeg,” she announces. We wheel back into the delivery room.
10:30-11:18 am: Labour. Oh my God, labour. At one point, nurse tells Frances, “You’re out of control.” Lincoln feels like he’s out of control as well, just not yelling as loud.
11:19 am: Naomi Frances Dunn arrives, screaming her head off. Six pounds, twelve ounces, and all is well.

We Need A New Category!

Sorry for the extreme delay in posting to here (life does occasionally *actually* get crazy in Emo), but this news is big. Very big. Please read the press release below:
———————————
In a rapidly-changing technical age, it has become more and more important for companies to pursue faster ways of getting products to market. We decided that the concept of RBD (Rapid-Baby-Deployment) was the type of development we wanted to focus on.
To that end, the staff of Vitaluna.net (formerly iDesign Graphics) breathlessly announce the release of nBaby, a brand-new product. Code-named “Naomi Frances Dunn,” (pronounced NY-o-ME) this product was released six weeks prematurely, but safely passed all beta testing with flying colours at 11:19 am on Friday, July 11, 2003 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ontario.
Weighing in at six pounds, twelve ounces, our new product narrowly avoided a release in Winnipeg — or, more specifically, somewhere over the Kenora area in an air ambulance (apparently, that whole Rapid-Baby-Deployment thing is frowned on in Fort Frances). She and the project’s lead, Frances, are running just fine.
And she’s one cute little bugger. :-)
Product shots are attached to this release. For more information about this product, please contact:

More product shots will be available shortly at http://www.vitaluna.net/
Love to all,
Lincoln, Frances, Gareth & Naomi (and Indigo the Border Collie)

Gonna Have to Add a New Section

Just when you think you’ve got a design for a web site down pat, *something* changes, and the whole structure of the site has to be revamped.
Frances and I are proud to announce that on or about the 24th of August of this year, we are expecting a new addition to the family. We’re pregnant!
Everything thus far is all green lights. We’ve had two ultrasounds already — can you rent those things? Although we are silently regretting the timing (third trimester and August NW Ontario heat are *not* a good combo, apparently), we’re absolutely ecstatic.
More updates on this most-cool development as they occur.

Is This Thing On?

Grrr…… somebody didn’t tell me to save, and now I have to do this thing AGAIN!!!!!!!!!
Anyhow, as I was saying, the other adult member of the house, wanted me to write something “NOW”, and as I could possibly be the slowest thinker ever (except of course when it comes to Trivia- then I rule), this probably won’t be the most well thought out piece of literature that I write.
Christmas was good and low key. I worked but didn’t work. I had the service on Sunday, which I finished before Christmas Eve, and spent some days at home with Gareth. We had lots of fun, for the most part, and ate lots of candy…ah my boy takes after me ;-) I was back to work today, and am gearing up for the crazy month of January – an administrative nightmare. February will probably be here before you can say “Put another entry in….”
Well, ta ta until next time :-)
Frances
