Green Bananas Time on a Ship

Remember how it was when we were young? We'd hear "old" people saying things like "I'm so old I don't even buy green bananas…" when they were in their 70s or 80s. Now here we are fast approaching the green bananas stage, and we're saying things like "We're so young we're going to cruise the world…"

The tale gets even better (?) when you hear about "old" people not just going on cruise ships, but performing on them.

Two cases in point are Debbie Reynolds and Mickey Rooney. They're appearing on Turner Classic Movies' second cruise in January. It's with the appropriate cruise line — Celebrity — and it's only five days long (sustainability changes as we age). Their "performances" are likely to be shaking hands, signing autographs and participating in screenings and panel discussions…all things that aging actors can still do.

Debbie Reynolds is 80. Mickey Rooney, by the time he steps on the Celebrity Constellation, will be 92.

As an anecdote, she played The Unsinkable Molly Brown in the movie of the same name almost 50 years ago and was nominated for an Academy Award, losing to Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews)…of course. The movie, if you missed it, is about a women who was a survivor and became a heroine of the Titanic.

Relax. It's not like going on the Titanic…it's more like going on a cruise with someone who survived the Titanic.

The cruise leaves Miami with stops at Grand Cayman and Cozumel, and the two headliners are among five Hollywood types who will also "perform" under the guidance of TCM hosts Robert Osborne and Ben Mankiewicz. It's only August and Sixthman, the company that organizes TCM cruises, is hoping the headliners will still be available in January.

We're just saying…they are 80 and 92, and maybe they talk about the green bananas..
