Cruise Ship Pilots — or Just Waldo

This is kind of a puzzle, which is why there are so many photos on today’s blog. In-house, we call it just a different version of Where’s Waldo? Surely, everybody has done — or tried to do — the jigsaw puzzle with nine million Waldos who all look the same. Whether you agree with our twisted sense of humor or not, Waldo in this case is a pilot.

He doesn’t fly planes, he boards ships. He’s in every port, on every ship, and no ship arrives or leaves without his approval. In some parts of the world, like the Panama Canal and the Kiel Canal, he has authority over the captain of the ship. We were told last year the Panama Canal was the only place in the world, but a ship’s captain later told us there were two such places.

So if you look at the two pictures on the left, do you see Waldo…the pilot. This was something like our third attempt (as in third ship) to see who crawls out of that little hole in the hull, at the bow. It happens so quickly, you seldom see it.

With this pilot boat, we captured the moment. Waldo, incidentally, is the figure in the white shirt. His colleague is just a helper in Waldo clothing.

Below these pictures is one of what a pilot looks like when he’s not being Waldo, when he’s on the bridge drinking coffee and giving orders. No, we didn’t get his name. He didn’t seem interested in volunteering it, and on the bridge he is The Boss, so we didn’t ask.

Below that, a picture of Waldo’s escape hatch on Oasis of the Seas. It’s right there under the “Oasis.” The  only ship from which we were able to snap a photo of the pilot as he emerged from the bow was on Carnival’s Ecstasy.

Hey, it’s not easy finding Waldo — anybody who’s ever done the jigsaw puzzle already knows that!
