Boys and Girls, Disney: Together Again

There are four ways of looking at the $250,000 Disney Cruise Line donated to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Florida a few days ago.

1. Disney never misses an opportunity to recruit Mouseketeer lovers of the future, nor an opportunity to prove its reputation as a good corporate citizen always concerned about trying to help disadvantaged kids.

2. Disney is merely honoring its tradition. More than half a century ago, Walt himself was made an honorary member of the B&GC's national board of directors. That sealed the relationship between Disney and the Club, in perpetuity.

3. Disney thought it seemed like a nice PR move to coincide with the Port Canaveral arrival of its newest ship, the Fantasy, because — after all — the ship is a place "where imagination comes alive."

4. Even Disney is being affected by tough economic times. A year ago, coinciding with the launch of the Disney Dream, a benefit cruise was used to raise funds for the B&GC. That number was $750,000.

Take your pick.
