Chipwrecked in the Caribbean

If you’ve been on a Western Caribbean cruise and made port stops at Cozumel, Roatan, Belize and Costa Maya, you now having something in common with the chipmunks. Or with The Chipmunks.

Their new movie is in the theaters on Friday. It’s called Chipwrecked and one of the differences between them and you (and other cruise passengers) is that they get stranded on a desert island, which a lot of people might think is a good place for the annoying Alvin to be. There is no report if they’re surrounded by beautiful women of their dreams, but the fact that there are Chipettes in the movie might be the tip-off.

It was 11 months ago that we first told you that this movie was in the making, that it was being shot in part on the Carnival Dream and in part in Hawaii, and that one of the “stars” was Katy Perry. Well, two out of three is okay when you’re making predictions…there’s no sign of Katy in the credits.

There is, however, mention of the fact that one of the chipmunk voices is that of Matthew Gray Gubler, otherwise known as Dr. Spencer Reid of Criminal Minds fame. We’ve watched so many episodes of Criminal Minds that it’s likely they wouldn’t slip that by us when we hear his voice on Chipwrecked.

You can view this movie as 87 minutes of your life that you’ll never get back, or as a chance to have a few harmless laughs, perhaps with your grandchildren. And if you don’t think this is a big deal, then you don’t know that the first two Chipmunks movies grossed $804 million.

And neither of them was on a cruise ship.

The fact that this one was prompted actor Jason Lee, who plays Dave Seville the Non-Chipmunk, to say: “You eat all day and all night, and you’re out at sea. It’s quite surreal, the cruise thing.”

We who love cruising could have told him that…all he had to do was ask.
