Total Eclipse Not Quite Total

Too bad about the Eclipse, isn’t it? The one in the sky and the one on the sea. If they’d been able to get their schedules together next November, they really could have made history.

If they had, the Solar Eclipse (that’s in the sky) and the Celebrity Eclipse (it’s on the sea) could have come as close to meeting as they ever will, on November 13 or 14. That’s the night of the Total Solar Eclipse and the point of the Greatest Eclipse, otherwise known as GE, is somewhere in the South Pacific, due east of New Zealand.

The Celebrity Eclipse, on that date, will be in the South Caribbean, probably somewhere between St. Thomas and St. Maarten.

Holland America’s Oosterdam, meanwhile, will be near GE. In fact, the cruise line is already selling tickets on what is now billed as the Solar Eclipse Cruise. It leaves Sydney on November 7 and, since it’ll be at sea for two weeks, it should be able to give passengers their best view of the moon’s blocking the sun.

But it’s too bad about the Oosterdam, isn’t it? It should have been named the Eclipse.
