<\/a>have to know much about Max’s work to believe it’s a good fit, and not just because he’s from New York, to be the Breakaway’s home come 2013.<\/p>\nHe is a “pop artist” although in the art community he has been called many things, all of them flattering. To most of us, he might be called a modern-day Andy Warhol<\/a> because when you know only a little about the subject “pop artist” that covers the big, er, picture.<\/p>\n Peter Max Finkelstein, however, is also a Holocaust survivor. He first learned of his love for painting in China, where his family lived for 10 years. He took art classes at the Louvre, the most famous museum in Paris, where his family also lived for many months. Next week he turns 74, and he has been official artist of many events, among them the World Series<\/a>, the Grammy Awards<\/a>, the Super Bowl<\/a> and the Olympic Games<\/a>.<\/p>\n Apparently his first journey on a ship was when he was 10, a slow boat from China to Africa, on the way to Israel. Presumably he will paint the hull of the Breakaway before it leaves the shipyard, and the irony is that the shipyard is in the country where he was born.<\/p>\n Germany.<\/p>\n DAILY DEAL:<\/strong><\/span> If you don’t know the difference between Picasso and Monet, or between Van Gogh and Rembrandt, it’s possible (probable?) that you don’t know much about Peter Max.
