\"\"<\/a>We spent part of our weekend reading about the Epic<\/a>, the 4,200-passenger ship Norwegian hoped to unveil next month. Hoped, because apparently there’s some doubt now, six days after a late-night fire damaged the Epic as the finishing touches are being added to it at a shipyard in France.<\/p>\n

Without passing judgment on the investigation into the fire, it’s a crime.<\/p>\n

A cruise line (and it could be any cruise line) spends almost two years and pours millions of dollars into building a new flagship, and now this. Norwegian meticulously plans that unveiling, that bottle of champagne on the bow, and that maiden voyage…and now this. Norwegian even made plans to unite Madonna with Elvis (maybe they did find him at a bakery in Missouri) \u2014 okay, so it’s a Legends<\/a> show \u2014 and to host the biggest fireworks display<\/a> anywhere on July 4th, courtesy of Macy’s…and now this.<\/p>\n

Of all the things that a cruise line can anticipate facing in the arrival of a new ship, a fire on the shipyard five weeks before its launch isn’t one of them.<\/p>\n

There are conflicting reports whether the Epic will be ready for its June 24 sailing across the Atlantic. As for Norwegian, maybe the cruise line is thinking this nightmare is just that, and didn’t really happen. There’s nary a word of an Epic fire on the NCL website<\/a>, where the countdown continues \u2014 36 days, plus hours and minutes until the Epic sets sail for New York.<\/p>\n

After all the wrong the fire has caused, maybe the clock will be right.<\/p>\n
