{"id":9295,"date":"2011-08-30T01:07:20","date_gmt":"2011-08-30T08:07:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/?p=9295"},"modified":"2011-08-30T01:07:20","modified_gmt":"2011-08-30T08:07:20","slug":"art-auctions-on-cruise-ships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vitaluna.net\/?p=9295","title":{"rendered":"Cruise Art Auctions&#8230;Really?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many of the cruise ships we have frequented have had extensive displays of artwork, lining the walls of the ship and enticing passengers to attend an auction \u2014 with free champagne \u2014 so they can take home a souvenir of their cruise. It&#8217;s a concept that&#8217;s always left us colder than sitting by the pool at night on the North Sea.<\/p>\n<p>Evidently, this is something people do. Allegedly, some of them have not been receiving what they purchased onboard and, again allegedly, this has led to the eviction of art dealers from cruise ships, the latest of them a company called International Art Galleries, until this month a supplier of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.celebritycruises.com\/home.do\">Celebrity Cruises<\/a>. Another dealer, Park West Gallery, has disappeared from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalcaribbean.com\/home.do\">Royal Caribbean<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.ncl.com\/\">Norwegian<\/a> ships on which we&#8217;ve cruised.<\/p>\n<p>The details have been reported on a website called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fineartregistry.com\/\">Fine Art Registry<\/a>, which publishes &#8220;hot news&#8221; (who knew?) for the art crowd.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve never liked art on a cruise ship \u2014 well, there was one time, but Art was a passenger \u2014 enough to fit into a suitcase that would&#8217;ve been too small anyway. We have, however, always wondered:<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-9313\" href=\"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/2011\/08\/art-auctions-on-cruise-ships\/art-1-2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-9313\" title=\"Art-1\" src=\"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Art-11-e1314148528356.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"306\" \/><\/a>\u2022 Does anybody really buy these expensive (by our standards) masterpieces?<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Do buyers believe it&#8217;s worth the hassle of having artwork shipped home&#8230;or do they have too much money?<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Is the reason that cruise lines have them on ships simply to make the walls interesting or attractive?<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Who makes a profit from this enterprise, the cruise line or the art dealer? Both?
