Their demographic was the answer, because thirtysomethings often view cruises as floating retirement homes, but the subject became more interesting.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m told that if you go on an Alaska cruise,&#8221; our friend continued, &#8220;it&#8217;s better to cruise from Alaska rather than to Alaska, because they say the waters are calmer going south.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hmmm.<\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t something we&#8217;d ever heard. Given that the roughest water we encountered on our recent Transatlantic cruise was after the ship headed north up the coast of Spain and France, we wondered if there was some credence to the theory.<\/p>\n<p>Somebody who has taken a two-week, return-trip cruise from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattle.gov\/\">Seattle<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/vancouver.ca\/\">Vancouver<\/a> \u2014 or somebody who has cruised <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alaska.com\/\">Alaska<\/a> multiple times \u2014 would have a more credible answer.<\/p>\n<p>What about it?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over dinner on Monday night, our daughter and son-in-law were asked by friends of ours if they&#8217;d ever been on an Alaska cruise.
