If that was the case yesterday in Miami, somebody has a $5-million ego!

That’s how Norwegian Cruise Line stepped into the world of philanthropy, and it wasn’t for one of those sexy-yet-worthy causes that attracts a lot of attention. It was for homeless people.

Besides being recognized as a good corporate citizen (NCL’s head office is in Miami), the cruise line is getting signage for its donation. A homeless shelter called Camillus House will be known as Norwegian Cruise Line Campus of Camillus House when construction is complete and the new building opens in a different part of the south Florida metropolis.

Five million bucks is one of the largest donations ever made to a social services organization in that part of the state and it’s far and away the largest NCL cash contribution to a charity.

The shelter, cramped and downtown, houses 268 people now and 100 of them sleep on mats in the courtyard outside. The project is bigger than the numbers you have read so far. The tab will be $84 million, all of it raised privately, and with NCL’s contribution and a matching one from Bob Dickinson, Chairman of the Board at Camillus House, it will only require $5 million more to meet the target.

“We’re turning into a legitimate company down here, and we want to be a leader and want to be a force in the local economy,” said Kevin Sheehan, NCL’s head man.

And here’s the irony…

Bob Dickinson, the other $5-million contributor yesterday, before he retired was the CEO of Carnival Cruise Lines.

A cynic might think that making a very public donation to a worthy cause is a photo op for the donator and the price you pay for the donate.
