There was a party yesterday in Los Angeles<\/a>, to celebrate an 80th birthday, which is always better than not celebrating an 80th birthday, isn’t it? One of the most important guests was missing\u2026these things often happen when you get to be 80, but this “guest” wasn’t gone, or even in rehab. She was traveling.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Captain Merrill Stubing turned 80 yesterday without The Love Boat. If it wasn’t Hollywood, that sentence would read: “Gavin MacLeod turned 80 yesterday without the Pacific Princess<\/a>.” Frankly, making it to his eighth decade was undoubtedly more important to MacLeod than having his old friend there to share it.<\/p>\n

He left his string of movie and television credits behind and walked into retirement some years ago, but The Love Boat’s still waiting for social security, as she has been ever since going under an assumed name when one of TV’s longest-running shows \u2014 her show \u2014 ended 25 years ago.<\/p>\n

Her big (almost four times bigger) sister the Golden Princess<\/a> stood in as the boat host for the party, and The Love Boat was there in spirit, or at least in icing, until Captain Stubing played fire extinguisher and his guests stuck their fingers into a ship that’s never been sweeter. The cake was five feet long and it came in 3D, a format that has gone and come back in the ship’s lifetime. Presumably there wasn’t much left of it by the time the Golden Princess set sail for Hawaii<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>As for The Love Boat, yesterday she was off the coast of Lombok, Indonesia, in the midst of going around the world in 107 days. In another era, going Around The World in 80 Days would have made The Love Boat a movie star.<\/p>\n

But\u2026been there, done that.<\/p>\n

You can still find Captain Stubing on TV. The show is syndicated in 92 countries around the world. Wouldn’t it be fitting if they were showing re-runs this week, in state rooms off the coast of Indonesia?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
