\"\"<\/a>Early this morning (in our world, 7:30 is early), Jennifer Hudson<\/a> became Disney’s<\/a> third Godmother, at the official “christening” \u2014 or “naming ceremony” to the political correctionists \u2014 of the Disney Dream<\/a>. A podcast of the event was in two places, which tells you something about its importance. If nobody cared, nobody would pod.<\/p>\n

To give you an idea how interested people are in this kind of ceremony, they not only get up by 7:30 to witness it. They go to see it, in this case on the pier of Port Canaveral<\/a>. They share gallery space with members of the media invited by Disney. They spend time speculating who it will be\u2026yesterday the \"\"<\/a>guess ran from Hudson to Tinker (“If Queen Elizabeth<\/a> can be godmother of two ships then so can I”) Bell…to Whoopi Goldberg…to Julie Andrews…to Cinderella.<\/p>\n

Jennifer Hudson \u2014 posing above with Disney President Bob Iger (center) and Resorts Chairman Tom Staggs \u2014 began her performing career on a Disney ship, the Wonder<\/a>, the first and so far only ship in Tinker’s flock, or fleet. That’s enough to make her a natural choice, if not a good one, but whether she’s a good choice or not she most definitely is a good story.<\/p>\n

A loser in the third season of American Idol, she won an Academy Award for her performance in Dream Girls<\/a>. That was before the boat was even conceived. Devastated in public by the Chicago murders of her mother, brother and nephew, she captured hearts around the nation by singing the national anthem \"\"<\/a>at the Super Bowl<\/a> just weeks later. And struggling with weight for much of her young life, she shed more than 50 pounds and became a spokeswoman for a company that helps people shed 50 pounds.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Today she is likely to be the most popular Disney godmother. The Magic’s<\/a> Godmother is Patty Disney, ex-wife of Roy Disney, Uncle Walt’s late nephew. The Wonder was christened by a cartoon character from another era, although no Disney characters ever disappear \u2014 they just go to theme parks.<\/p>\n

Jennifer Hudson is today. Nobody has to explain who she is. She’ll turn 30 later this year\u2026that makes her about 77 years younger than Tinker Bell. She is in the prime of life as a performer. She’s won a Grammy<\/a>, she’s performed at the White House<\/a>, she’s been on Oprah<\/a>\u2026all of it beginning from a job on a cruise ship called the “Wonder” and continuing today on another one called the “Dream.”<\/p>\n

Oh yes, she is now officially Disney’s<\/em> Dream Girl.<\/p>\n
