It has to do with the, uh, facilities. To paint the picture for you, when you walk through the door from the hall, the shower is on the left, the toilet is on the right. Both are behind smoky-glass, curved sliding doors.

We’ll get to the sink later.

The complaint was the lack of privacy at private times. While not exactly transparent, you can see through glass. Sort of. If you wished.

We don’t want to dismiss this as a tempest in a teapot, but that’s kind of what it is for most passengers. If they’re married, or partners, the privacy factor doesn’t exist. If they’re a couple of guys or a couple of girls just on vacation together, it’s probably not much of an issue. Only when it crosses generational lines does it become one. And there IS a curtain to section off that part of the room — although we understand that was an afterthought to diffuse the initial criticism, and remember that behind the curtain is the door to the hall.

When we brought the subject up with Norwegian executive Andy Stuart the other night he whipped out his iPhone and showed us a picture of a W hotel room where he’d recently stayed…and pointed out it had an almost-transparent, smoky-glass door between the shower and the bedroom proper. You think he might be a little sensitive?

One man we met is here with his aging mother. This can be awkward. Even more likely to be awkward is when a couple brings kids with them, although as one passenger said, there isn’t exactly room in the rooms for more than two people.

That brings up the sink.

It’s small, which is fine, and it’s in a corner, kind of between the shower and the bed, which is not fine. At least this is the way it is in our balcony room. We knew when our suitcase had to be turned sideways to get through the 20 inches of space between the sink and the bed that this was going to be annoying. We just had no idea how often one of us would be at the sink when the other wanted to get by (having the garbage can under it is problematic, too).

The same space issue applies when you sit at the computer — as we must — in the only part of the room where you can.

However, being spaced out is a small complaint. The staterooms are nicely finished with lots of room in closets and drawers, flat-screen TVs and more-than-adequate lighting once you find all the switches. If you’re in a balcony, and there are more balconies than anything, there would be enough room to barbecue if you could…and no, you can’t.

But who would have room in a suitcase for the barbecue anyway?

From the first time somebody with unfettered objectivity stepped onto the Norwegian Epic, there has been a controversy about the staterooms.
