Most everybody who tried it was surprised at how smoothly it worked, and most everybody who wanted to try had the chance to saber a bottle of champagne.

Except one.

The father of the bride.

It was just one of those things that gets overlooked on your daughter’s wedding day. There are parental priorities, like making sure the wind and rain didn’t blow the roof off the reception tent, and if there’s one thing a father doesn’t want on this day, it’s to take the spotlight off his daughter…even for the swipe of a sword.

So, somewhere on the waters of the Pacific nearly four years later at a Celebrity Life seminar, the father of the bride got his chance.

Swoosh! The perfect cut made it worth the wait.

* * *
Red or white? New World or Old? Sweet or dry? Cork or screw-top?

There were definitely questions to be answered for wine lovers like us aboard the Celebrity Millennium. All it took was a little Wine Appreciation 101, courtesy of Celebrity Life. On-board “Foodie” Michael Ruggiero entertained the crowd, and then the wine-ing began, with Cellar Master Saravan Krishnan.

It was a little slow starting, and guess why? Celebrity was expecting the usual 15 or 20 guests and 90 showed up, all anxious for a taste of the half-dozen bottles on the menu. With breadsticks and a little cheese thrown in, it was a bargain at $10 a head.

Having the right blend (no pun intended) of facts and fun, Saravan covered the basics, and more. We learned more about what seems so elementary, how to open bottles — who ever told us it was important to remove the cork gently? We acquired tips on decanting, what glasses to use, and even how to drink the wine. Nobody who knows us would’ve thought we’d need instruction there!

Wine Appreciation 101 lasted an hour, and the Cellar Master graciously answered questions from anybody who had them long after the tasting was over. He probably would have escorted us back to our stateroom for the required after-wine nap.

That’s it…we’re done (in more ways than one).

AT SEA ON THE CELEBRITY MILLENNIUM — In 2006, our daughter and her husband invited wedding guests to “saber the champagne.” If you’ve never seen this little trick, it’s basically chopping the top off a bottle of champagne with a sword.
