As is always the case at Olympian sites, accommodation is pricy and at a premium but when somebody else (the company sending us there) is paying the bill it\u2019s not as pressing.<br \/>\nWe mention this on the eve of the current Winter Olympics, about to get underway in Vancouver and its ski-crazy neighbor, Whistler. Months ago, there was talk of importing cruise ships to be moored as hotels at a town called Squamish, about halfway between Vancouver and Whistler. For whatever reason, the idea was scrapped, and alleviating a potential shortage of affordable rooms went with it.<br \/>\nThings will work out, of course, because at the Olympics they always do.<br \/>\nIn 1980, our accommodation was several miles out of Lake Placid. It was brutally cold, which only added to the discomfort of having to make the trip at least once a day, on what seemed to be a well-ventilated bus. Our \u201croommate\u201d in an equally well-ventilated motel of sorts was another journalist who shall remain nameless. His nightclothes were, well, like something out of Charles Dickens\u2026shoulder to ankle nightshirt, with nightcap (not that kind!).
