Well, except for playing the same numbers in lotto. Oh, and there is that spilling the salt thing. And I don&#8217;t walk under ladders (or up them, either). Plus, there is wearing red golf shirts on Sunday because that&#8217;s what the best golfer in the world does. And&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Okay, we all have our quirks.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3227\" href=\"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/2010\/09\/coins-ships-ceremony-carnival-magic\/magic-7\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3227\" title=\"Magic-7\" src=\"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/Magic-7-e1283994058726.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"205\" \/><\/a>I&#8217;m just not sure I buy into the ceremonial insertion of a coin during the building of a ship. Now, I am being asked to believe that because the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carnival.com\/cms\/fun\/ships\/carnival_dream\/default.aspx?shipCode=DR\">Carnival Magic<\/a> \u2014 due to start making its way to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.galveston.com\/default.asp\">Galveston<\/a> from Europe next spring \u2014  has had a commemorative coin welded to its mast while under construction  in Italy, all is good. And I was naive enough to think all was good  just because it was a nice cruise ship!<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-3224\" href=\"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/2010\/09\/coins-ships-ceremony-carnival-magic\/220px-loonie_obverse_view-2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3224\" title=\"220px-Loonie_obverse_view\" src=\"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/220px-Loonie_obverse_view1-e1283910106312.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a>Yes I know at the Olympics in Salt Lake City the Canadians buried a &#8220;loonie&#8221; at center ice prior to the Games and both the men and the women beat the U.S. in the finals to win the gold medal &#8220;because of it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This has been going on (coins hidden in ships, not ice) since Roman times, when the &#8220;coin ceremony&#8221; was thought to provide a ship with divine protection. This leaves us to\u00a0 believe that all the ships that sunk \u2014 in war and in peace \u2014 were without coin.<\/p>\n<p>I know, I know&#8230;it&#8217;s just one of this silly ceremonial superstitions.
