My wife has always liked the idea of being in the south, because south means warmth, and warmth means you don’t freeze, which is what most of us did in our youth (and beyond) for half of every year. So “south” has a sweet sound to it for the Travel Queen.<\/p>\n

Then I tossed out the “deep south” as a possible destination. At first she thought I meant Alabama and Mississippi, but when the word “Antarctica” was finally dislodged from my throat, she shivered. Well, what better time to spit it out than in the middle of the hot, hot summer.<\/p>\n

Did I mention she loves hot, hot summer?<\/p>\n

Undeterred, I raised the possibility because I’d been reading about Celebrity’s<\/a> cruises to a continent that’s bigger than the one we live on, and then I stumbled across a website<\/a> extolling the virtues of Antarctic cruises.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>When I mentioned these were “unique” cruises, she said there’s<\/em> a word that belongs on the same page of the dictionary as “interesting.”<\/p>\n

When I said we could get away from it all, she wanted to know what was so bad about just staying with it, like “it” was a contagious disease.<\/p>\n

When I hyped the opportunity to visit Elephant Island, she said they have elephants in Africa and you can wear shorts to see them.<\/p>\n

Even when I promised to sweep her away to Paradise Island, she quickly replied that the last thing she read about Antarctica<\/a> was that the average temperature in the entire continent’s hot spot was 43 degrees, and that was the last she wanted to hear about a cruise to Antarctica.<\/p>\n

I was going to recommend (for the rest of you) that checking out Celebrity’s website for Antarctic sailings might be worthwhile, but I couldn’t find any. To which the Travel Queen would say: “They got cold feet.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
