On the first of this month, the Mexican state of Quintana Roo (that includes Cozumel) moved from Central Time to Eastern Time.<\/p>\n
Our conversation yesterday went something like this…<\/p>\n
“I don’t understand.”<\/p>\n
“What don’t you understand?”<\/p>\n
“How can Cozumel change its time to Eastern when it’s not Eastern?”<\/p>\n
“Maybe it is Eastern.”<\/p>\n
“Well, it’s certainly never felt<\/i> Eastern.”<\/p>\n
“Get a map, draw a line and you’ll see Cozumel is on the border?”<\/p>\n
“What border?”<\/p>\n
“The time zone border, dummy.”<\/p>\n
“My line going north goes between Tallahassee and New Orleans, just misses Nashville and hits Cincinnati and Detroit.”<\/p>\n
“Exactly.”<\/p>\n
“Exactly what?”<\/p>\n
“All those places are in the Eastern time zone except New Orleans, which is also on the border.”<\/p>\n
“What border?”<\/p>\n
“Who’s on first…?”<\/p>\n
“Does this apply to Cancun<\/a>, Playa del Carmen<\/a>…?”<\/p>\n “So if what you say is true, why has it taken so long for Cozumel to discover it belongs in the Eastern time zone?”<\/p>\n “No maps on which to draw lines, maybe.”<\/p>\n “Why are they ‘moving’ east after all this…time?”<\/p>\n “Because of the people.”<\/p>\n “They’re not Eastern, they’re Central.” <\/p>\n “They all come from the East.”<\/p>\n “So if most of the people in Los Angeles<\/a> came from the East, they’d change the time zone?”<\/p>\n “Who knows?”<\/p>\n “And why now?”<\/p>\n “To make it less confusing.”<\/p>\n “It’s not working.”<\/p>\n “There’s another reason.”<\/p>\n “Which is?”<\/p>\n “Energy. An extra hour of daylight means one less hour for restaurants and nightspots to keep the lights turned on.”<\/p>\n “Isn’t that what Daylight Savings is for?”<\/p>\n “Don’t go there…and there’s also the beach.”<\/p>\n “The beach?”<\/p>\n “An extra hour on the beach makes it easier for Cozumel to compete with the beaches of Jamaica, Dominican Republic<\/a>, even Cuba<\/a>.
