{"id":20223,"date":"2014-03-07T01:00:01","date_gmt":"2014-03-07T09:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/?p=20223"},"modified":"2014-03-07T01:00:01","modified_gmt":"2014-03-07T09:00:01","slug":"monday-67","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vitaluna.net\/?p=20223","title":{"rendered":"Quirky, funky, alternative\u2026now No. 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">When we first sailed on a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www2.ncl.com\/\" style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">Norwegian<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\"> ship (the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www2.ncl.com\/ship\/star\/overview\" style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">Star<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">), it was a cruise line that was considered a little quirky (have you seen the hull paintings?), a little funky (you could eat at whatever time you wanted) and a little alternative (it was a misfit in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Gem-4-copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Gem\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-20245\" height=\"327\" src=\"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Gem-4-copy.jpg\" width=\"350\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">the world of Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Princess).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">How things have changed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cruiseindustrynews.com\">Cruise Industry News<\/a> Annual Report, Norwegian ranks third in total capacity, behind <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carnival.com\/\">Carnival<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalcaribbean.com\/home.do\">Royal Caribbean<\/a>. The fact that Norwegian added the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breakaway.ncl.com\/\">Breakaway<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.ncl.com\/cruise-ship\/getaway\/overview\">Getaway<\/a> in the last 14 months would account for the latest jump, and for the bulk of its 19 per cent increase in capacity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.princess.com\/index.html\">Princess<\/a> is No. 4, also with a huge jump (18.5)&hellip;can you say <a href=\"http:\/\/www.princess.com\/learn\/ships\/rp\/index.html\">Royal Princess<\/a>, the line&#39;s first new ship in five years? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.costacruise.com\/\">Costa<\/a>, of all cruise lines, ranks fifth, thanks to two months of 2013 with its new ship (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.costacruise.com\/usa\/costa_neoriviera.html\">neoRiviera<\/a>). <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msccruises.com\/gl_en\/homepage.aspx\">MSC<\/a>, with no new ship, slipped from third to sixth place, which made room for Norwegian to leap-frog the others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">With two more new ships on the horizon &mdash; the Escape next year and the Bliss in 2017 &mdash; it&#39;s a status that Norwegian figures to maintain. Barring attrition of its older vessels, those will be the 14th and 15th ships for a line that had only 10 when we boarded the Star six years ago. Carnival currently has 23, Royal Caribbean 21 with two <i>Quantum Class<\/i> ships in the works and Princess 17 with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.princess.com\/learn\/ships\/gp\/index.html#.UVnf76s6VFk\">Regal Princess<\/a> coming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">The CIN annual report estimates that with double occupancy Norwegian can carry 1,722,400 passengers. Princess has a capacity of 1.6 million, about 200,000 more than Costa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">Not bad for what was a quirky, funky, alternative cruise line.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 13px;
