{"id":19568,"date":"2013-12-10T01:00:22","date_gmt":"2013-12-10T09:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/?p=19568"},"modified":"2013-12-10T01:00:22","modified_gmt":"2013-12-10T09:00:22","slug":"tuesday-68","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vitaluna.net\/?p=19568","title":{"rendered":"Cuban Cruising Causing Angst in Florida"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">The fight to cruise <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gocuba.ca\/client\/home\/index.php\">Cuba<\/a> is on and the battleground, which may or may not surprise you, is Florida.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">As the U.S. and the Communist country 90 miles from its southernmost shore inch towards normalizing relations, Florida sees some of its cruise stakes slipping away, like fragments of driftwood floating into the Gulf of Mexico.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">The two imminent victims are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tampagov.net\/\">Tampa<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.keywest.com\/\">Key West<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">While they aren&#39;t exactly hot ports of the industry, both have enough of a cruise-ship presence that if it should go away, there would be an impact on each&#39;s economy. While places like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.miami.com\/\">Miami<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/ci.ftlaud.fl.us\/\">Fort Lauderdale<\/a> are clearly poised to send <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Varadero-Henryk-Kotowski-copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Varadero\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19601\" height=\"388\" src=\"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Varadero-Henryk-Kotowski-copy.jpg\" width=\"650\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: right;\"><em><span style=\"font-size:9px;\">-Henryk Kotowski photo<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">ships full of passengers to Cuba, the concerns of Tampa and Key West have nothing to do with their geographical desirability, which both have with regards to Cuba.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">It has to do with ships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">In Tampa, the port is not equipped to handle the biggest cruise ships, and when Cuba is finally on-limits you can anticipate there will be a rush. (As an aside, there has been talk of Tampa being the northern terminus for ferry service from Cuba.) <\/span><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">Tampa&#39;s ineligibility for cruise ships is tied to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, which isn&#39;t high enough. If you can believe it, government officials are looking at raising the bridge!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">In Key West, a frequent port on many Caribbean cruises, the concern is that it will be replaced by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webhavana.com\/\">Havana<\/a> and other Cuban ports less than 100 miles away. So it&#39;s &quot;problem&quot; is being &quot;attractive&quot; beyond making channels wider and deeper, although that&#39;s part of the&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.6em;\">equation.
