{"id":18917,"date":"2013-09-26T01:00:24","date_gmt":"2013-09-26T08:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/?p=18917"},"modified":"2013-09-26T01:00:24","modified_gmt":"2013-09-26T08:00:24","slug":"thursday-60","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vitaluna.net\/?p=18917","title":{"rendered":"Beware roaming ship network charges when taking cellphones on a cruise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">One of the services we try to provide you with if you&#39;re going on a cruise &mdash; in addition to good deals, interesting personality pieces, a personal look at the news and so on &mdash; is what you might call &quot;tips for cruising.&quot; Today is one of them, and one that never occurred to us until we read about a couple on a Transatlantic cruise from <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/ci.ftlaud.fl.us\/\" style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 1.6em;\">Fort Lauderdale<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\"> to Europe on the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.princess.com\/learn\/ships\/ep\/index.html\" style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 1.6em;\">Emerald Princess<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">It&#39;s about cellphones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">The couple, Ronald and Donna Schmidt, told Melanie Payne of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news-press.com\/\">news-press.com<\/a> in Florida that they were hit with $47 in roaming charges incurred while NOT <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/iPhone-copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"iPhone copy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-18950\" height=\"428\" src=\"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/iPhone-copy.jpg\" width=\"300\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">using their phones on a cruise. The Schmidts were gone 17 days, put their phones in the stateroom safe and decided to let the batteries drain throughout the cruise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">That cost them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">When they explained this to their carrier, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.verizon.com\">Verizon<\/a>, they were told there is a big sign on the gangplank telling passengers to turn off their cellphones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">In all our cruises, we have NEVER seen such a sign.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">But that&#39;s not the point, which is that leaving your cellphone &quot;on&quot; when cruising can incur roaming charges. Once you leave your carrier&#39;s network area, your phone searches for another network and another signal. It will likely pick up the ship&#39;s network and if somebody calls you, send a text or transmits a photo, you will probably pay for roaming&hellip;whether you see the call\/text or not. So the best thing to do is turn off the phone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">If on the other hand your&nbsp;phone is a &quot;smartone,&quot;&nbsp;you can put it on &quot;airplane mode&quot; and you&#39;ll be able to use its other functions without ever connecting to the ship&#39;s network, which has been known to cost $5 a minute for roaming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size:14px;\">Just remember the mode is &quot;airplane&quot;
