A week earlier, there was a woman at the helm of a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.silversea.com\/\" style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">Silversea<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\"> cruise ship for the first time. These things are one day going to be old news, especially the latter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">While Sarah Thomas was the first female to be a pro football official, Margrith Ettlin <a href=\"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/2013\/08\/monday-41\/margrith-ettlin\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-18621\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-18621\" height=\"227\" src=\"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Margrith-Ettlin.jpeg\" title=\"Margrith Ettlin\" width=\"147\" \/><\/a>(left) is &mdash; by our unofficial count &mdash; the fourth woman to be captain of a cruise ship, in her case the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.silversea.com\/expeditions\/silver-explorer\/\">Silver Explorer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The first was Karin Stahre-Jansen (below, right), who became the &quot;master&quot; of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalcaribbean.com\/findacruise\/ships\/class\/ship\/home.do;jsessionid=00002HsUNbCAuk-UVjZnITQ_Ox1:13hldcill?br=R&amp;shipClassCode=SS&amp;shipCode=MN\">Royal Caribbean&#39;s Monarch of the Seas<\/a>, then&nbsp;sailing&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/2013\/08\/monday-41\/karin-stahre-janson\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-18624\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-18624\" height=\"269\" src=\"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Karin-Stahre-Janson-e1376878301864.jpeg\" title=\"Karin Stahre-Janson\" width=\"147\" \/><\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">Mexican&nbsp;Riviera cruises from <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.losangeles.com\/\" style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">Los Angeles<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">. That was in 2007. Three years later, Sarah Breton became captain of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pocruises.com.au\/ourships\/pages\/pacificjewel.aspx\" style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">P&amp;O&#39;s Pacific Pearl<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">, in Australia. And last month, what might be called the most traditional of cruise lines &mdash; <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cunard.com\/\" style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">Cunard<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\"> &mdash; welcomed Captain Inger Olsen as she guided the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cunard.com\/en-US\/Ships\/Queen-Victoria\/\" style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">Queen Victoria<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\"> into her first port, in the Faroe Islands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In an age when women go to war, presumably doing whatever their male counterparts are called upon to do, there is of course no reason why a woman shouldn&#39;t be qualified to be in charge of a mega-ton cruise ship.
