{"id":17662,"date":"2013-05-28T01:11:45","date_gmt":"2013-05-28T08:11:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/?p=17662"},"modified":"2013-05-28T01:11:45","modified_gmt":"2013-05-28T08:11:45","slug":"tuesday-40","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vitaluna.net\/?p=17662","title":{"rendered":"New Caribbean Port Coming in 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">The first time we cruised to &quot;Honduras&quot; was about three years ago and the opportunity to do so was intriguing, since it was a country we had never visited&#8230;and it&#39;s always interesting to go somewhere new.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Then we looked at a map.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The ship &mdash; <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.ncl.com\/ship\/epic\">Norwegian&#39;s Epic<\/a> &mdash; was visiting Roatan. Now technically, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.roatanonline.com\/\">Roatan<\/a> is part of Honduras. It&#39;s an island that sits in the Gulf of Honduras, the largest of three islands that <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/2013\/05\/tuesday-40\/trujillo-map-copy\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17716\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-17716\" height=\"295\" src=\"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Trujillo-map-copy.jpg\" title=\"The Bay of Honduras\" width=\"350\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color:#000000;\">make up one &quot;department&quot; or province of the 18 in this Central American country. Put it another way: the population of Honduras is about 8,000,000&#8230;the population of Roatan is just over 70,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Roatan has beaches and scuba diving and a tourist economy fueled by cruise ships. It is a long way from the country&#39;s capital, Tegucigalpa, ands not just geographically. The mainland has never really been a magnet for travelers, many of whom think it should stay that way. Honduras has been more of a hotspot for terrorism than tourism, with 300 wars or rebellions in its 200 years of independence. In a way, seeing Roatan as representative of its country is not unlike seeing Hawaii as representative of its country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Anyway, things are changing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">There&#39;s a new cruise port on the Honduran mainland. It&#39;s called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bananacoast.com\/\">Banana Coast<\/a>, it cost $30 million and it will be open for business next year. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollandamerica.com\/main\/Main.action\">Holland America<\/a> has committed to 11 port calls over the next two years, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.silversea.com\/\">Silversea&#39;s<\/a> Silver Cloud will stop by in December 2014.
