One of the staples that comes with cruising is having your picture taken, and having your picture taken, and having your…a photographic Ground Hog Day. Then you go to the photo gallery to see if any of them make you look better than you think you look and, if any do, there's an addition to your suitcase.<\/span><\/p>\n

Get the picture?<\/p>\n

To do that (get the picture), you normally have to pore over racks and racks of photos of every passenger on the ship while trying to remember what time you embarked, if you were in that restaurant or which cartoon character was greeting you at the foot of the gangplank when the photographer went to work.<\/p>\n

There is an option to part of that process, but the jury is still out.<\/p>\n

Face-recognition software made it possible for you search photos of you and whoever else is in your stateroom by swiping your key card at a photo kiosk. That instantly brings up on a screen all photos that were taken of you and makes it easy to choose which ones to buy. The first time we encountered this process was on the Norwegian Epic<\/a> and to us, this modern process seemed like a no-brainer. <\/p>\n

However…<\/p>\n

The drawbacks we're hearing about are:<\/p>\n

1. Cruise lines which have to invest in the software and hardware to present photos this way may be finding that passengers are more inclined to buy<\/i> when they have a print in their hands than when looking at the pictures on a screen, for whatever reason.<\/p>\n

2. Passengers are looking at crisp, digital images on a screen and when they arrange to have their selection(s) printed on photo paper, the quality's not quite as good and they're disappointed.<\/p>\n

On our last cruise, the cruise director was relating some of the strange<\/i> questions he encountered from passengers. One had to do with finding their pictures in the photo gallery.<\/p>\n

"How will we know," they asked, "that it's us?"<\/p>\n

In that case, it doesn't really matter if it's the traditional process or face recognition.<\/span><\/p>\n
