{"id":17030,"date":"2013-04-09T01:00:41","date_gmt":"2013-04-09T08:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/?p=17030"},"modified":"2013-04-09T01:00:41","modified_gmt":"2013-04-09T08:00:41","slug":"tuesday-32","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vitaluna.net\/?p=17030","title":{"rendered":"New Evacuation System on Breakaway"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/2013\/04\/tuesday-32\/rfd-marin-ark-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17077\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-17077\" height=\"450\" src=\"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/RFD-Marin-Ark-2.jpg\" title=\"RFD Marin Ark-2\" width=\"300\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); line-height: 1.6em;\">Let&#39;s start with a couple of acronyms that will help in this story, most of which will be told by pictures:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">MES &mdash; Marine Evacuation Systems<br \/>\n\tSOLAS &mdash; Safety Of Life At Sea<\/span><br \/>\n\t<span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); line-height: 1.6em;\">LSA &mdash; Life Saving Appliance<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">There is a new MES on the market &mdash; called the RFD Marin Ark2 &mdash; and it will surface (no pun intended) on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.ncl.com\/\">Norwegian<\/a> Breakaway when it arrives in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/portal\/site\/nycgov\/?front_door=true\">New York<\/a> three weeks from now. It is capable of evacuating up to 862 passengers in 30 minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Assume that the average cruise ship now carries 3,000 passengers. That means an entire ship can be evacuated in just under two hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">For us, the logical question is why not four MES units, which would cut the evacuation time to 30 minutes. That&#39;s where SOLAS and LSA come into the picture. We&#39;re told that SOLAS regulations strictly state that &quot;for a cruise vessel, MES cannot exceed 25% of the primary LSA requirement; 75% of the primary requirement to be satisfied by lifeboats.&quot;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">So, if a ship is to have two Marin Ark2s, as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breakaway.ncl.com\/\">Breakaway<\/a> does, capable of evacuating 1,600 <\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">people in 30 minutes, then it must also have enough lifeboats to evacuate 4,800 <\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">more people in 30 minutes. In the Breakaway&#39;s case, that should be everybody on board, passengers and crew alike.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Safety is always the No. 1 priority on ships. The Marin Ark2 is the only system capable of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/2013\/04\/tuesday-32\/rfd-marin-ark-4\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17082\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17082\" height=\"383\" src=\"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/RFD-Marin-Ark-4.jpg\" title=\"RFD Marin Ark2\" width=\"660\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color:#000000;\">evacuating that many people that quickly and it is designed to reduce lifeboats needed, not replace them. The link between this large floating LSA and the ship is two fully-enclosed &quot;slide paths&quot; that allow for &quot;safe, rapid and controlled&quot; descent without being exposed to the elements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">It goes without saying that nobody ever wants to try it out for real.
