A product of the sixties &mdash; well, just in some ways &mdash; I&#39;ve never really been a dress-up kind of guy. I&#39;ve never owned a tuxedo. At our wedding, I wore a royal blue jacket and striped pants&#8230;or trousers, as they would say in Cunard speak. I could count the number of times a tux has been on this body on three fingers, maybe two.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/2013\/03\/thursday-36\/cunard-formal\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16853\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-16853\" height=\"223\" src=\"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Cunard-formal.jpg\" title=\"Cunard-formal\" width=\"300\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Get the picture?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Cunard has always been a dress-up kind of cruise line. Tuxes everywhere, right? No tux, no ship. Well, not any more. The pendulum has swung.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">This week, the world&#39;s most famous cruise line announced an update to dress codes, a loosening of the ties, its ties with the past that is. Actually, it&#39;s been happening for a while, this shift to a more casual attire, but now &mdash; methinks for the first time &mdash; there are more casual nights than formal nights on Cunard&#39;s three ocean liners: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cunard.com\/en-US\/Ships\/Queen-Victoria\/\">Queen Victoria<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cunard.com\/en-US\/Ships\/Queen-Mary-2\/\">Queen Mary 2<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cunard.com\/en-US\/Ships\/Queen-Elizabeth\/\">Queen Elizabeth<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">I loved Cunard&#39;s statement, positioning the news as a renewing &quot;its commitment to the joy of dressing up&quot; in explaining:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">&quot;In a world where everything seems to tend towards the casual, Cunard is proud to give passengers the opportunity to put on their best bib and tucker and really shine.&nbsp; Dressing <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/2013\/03\/thursday-36\/cunard-informal\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16852\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-16852\" height=\"179\" src=\"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Cunard-informal.jpg\" title=\"Cunard-informal\" width=\"226\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color:#000000;\">up heightens anticipation and brings an extra special sense of occasion to an evening at sea.&nbsp; Our passengers tell us it makes all the difference to their enjoyment of a big night out on board.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">In other words, a shift to modern trends while trying not to annoy passengers who have always loved the elegance of formality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">On a one-week Cunard cruise, there will now be &quot;two or three&quot; formal nights and &quot;four or five&quot; informal nights where jackets are still required but ties are not to &quot;heighten the sense of anticipation for formal nights even more.&quot;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Whatever Cunard calls it, I call it a move to get me on board one of the Queens<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12028\" height=\"125\" src=\"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/DailyDeal-2-e1334202169354.jpg\" title=\"DailyDeal-2\" width=\"300\" \/><br \/>\n\t<a href=\"http:\/\/www2.ncl.com\/ship\/jewel\/overview\">Norwegian Jewel<\/a><br \/>\n\t7 nights<br \/>\n\tMay 8, 2013<br \/>\n\t<a href=\"http:\/\/www.losangeles.com\/\">Los Angeles<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sanfrancisco.com\/\">San Francisco<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.el.com\/to\/astoria\/\">Astoria<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.victoria.ca\/common\/index.shtml\">Victoria<\/a>, Nanaimo, <a href=\"http:\/\/vancouver.ca\/\">Vancouver<\/a><br \/>\n\tInside: $319<br \/>\n\t<span style=\"color:#ff0000;\"><strong>Cost per day: $45<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n\t<a href=\"http:\/\/www2.ncl.com\/ship\/jewel\/overview\">www.ncl.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I think Cunard is getting ready for me.
