One that we couldn&#39;t squeeze in was about the legendary ship&#39;s legacy: Its demise in 1914 led to the formation of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.navcen.uscg.gov\/?pageName=IIPHome\"><em>International Ice Patrol<\/em><\/a>, and from that day to this, no lives have been lost to ship collisions with icebergs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Fast forward 98 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.costacruise.com\/\">Costa<\/a> Concordia, twice the size of the Titanic, wrecked on rocks near Italy just&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0);\">over a year ago. It has become the modern-day version of the Titanic even though the death toll (32) wasn&#39;t nearly as staggering (1,507).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">So what will the Concordia&#39;s legacy be?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">It&#39;s already taking shape.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">On <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/60-minutes\/\"><em>60 Minutes<\/em><\/a> a couple of weeks ago, CBS did a Concordia update. Among its revolutionary findings: a &quot;new ship&quot; is being welded onto both sides of the Concordia&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/2013\/02\/friday-30\/concordia-3pp-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16192\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16192\" height=\"358\" src=\"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Concordia-3pp.jpg\" title=\"Concordia off the coast of Italy\" width=\"650\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">&quot;like big Lego&quot; so that the disabled ship can be rolled, raised, buoyed by pumped air and floated to shore, something that&#39;s never before been tried. The cost is probably not much less than it was when the Concordia was built nine years ago: $400 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">On a website belonging to a well-known maritime lawyer and cruise safety advocate, Jim Walker, there is concern that the world&#39;s two biggest cruise ships &mdash; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oasisoftheseas.com\">Oasis of the Seas<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allureoftheseas.com\">Allure of the Seas<\/a> &mdash; don&#39;t have enough lifeboats to carry their massive populations to safety should disaster strike.
