My wife used to be nervous about flying over water, because she couldn't swim.<\/p>\n

These days, you will find her on cruise ships whenever possible, even though she's no closer to doing the butterfly, backstroke or crawl than she's ever been. Even floating remains an issue.<\/p>\n

Clearly, she is not nervous about cruising because she can't swim.<\/p>\n

And she has company.<\/p>\n

A survey of cruise passengers in Great Britain revealed that 19 per cent, or almost 1 in 5, are unable to swim. The question becomes: Why do they have to?<\/p>\n

Only in an emergency, and 63 per cent of the cruisers surveyed felt life jackets would alleviate their fears of drowning. And 24 per cent said they never considered swimming an issue when booking their cruise. And 73 per cent said swimming was not a pre-requisite when on a cruise. All of this, despite the tragic drownings when the Costa<\/a> Concordia capsized<\/p>\n

My wife was not among those surveyed, but she would concur with all of those statistics, because the closest she ever comes to deep water is in a hot tub.<\/p>\n

Now, about that fear of flying…<\/p>\n
