One hurricane.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">With at least 20% of the entire U.S. population affected by Hurricane Sandy, here&#39;s a rough re-cap of how some cruise ships were impacted (as reported by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.CRUISE.co.uk\">Cruise.Co<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cruisecritic.com\/\">Cruise <\/a><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/2012\/10\/tuesday-17\/hurricane-sandy-350\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-14951\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14951\" height=\"297\" src=\"http:\/\/cruisingdoneright.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Hurricane-Sandy-350.jpg\" title=\"Hurricane Sandy\" width=\"350\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color:#000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cruisecritic.com\/\">Critic<\/a> and a myriad of news sources on the Internet):<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">&bull; Five ships yesterday were caught in or near 30-foot seas churned by Sandy &mdash; <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.ncl.com\/ship\/jewel\/overview\">Norwegian Jewel<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carnival.com\/cms\/fun\/ships\/carnival_miracle\/default.aspx?shipCode=MI\">Carnival Miracle<\/a>, Royal Caribbean&#39;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalcaribbean.com\/findacruise\/ships\/class\/ship\/home.do;jsessionid=0000qNZMYvzM70BFt-cLBOv1KIR:12hbioan0?br=R&amp;shipClassCode=VY&amp;shipCode=EX\">Explorer of the Seas<\/a>, Aida Luna and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cunard.com\/en-US\/Ships\/Queen-Mary-2\/\">Queen Mary 2<\/a> (trying vainly to escape Sandy&#39;s path as it headed east for England).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">&bull; Holland America&#39;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollandamerica.com\/cruise-vacation-onboard\/Eurodam\">Eurodam<\/a> had to change its departure from Fort Lauderdale to Jacksonville, bussing all its passengers over 320 miles in windy conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">&bull; Disney&#39;s <a href=\"http:\/\/disneycruise.disney.go.com\/ships-activities\/ships\/fantasy\/\">Fantasy<\/a> finally made it to Port Canaveral with a shipload of scared and sick passengers tossed around while the Fantasy sustained damage to restaurants, bars, shops and stateroom furniture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">&bull; One ship, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carnival.com\/cms\/fun\/ships\/carnival_pride\/default.aspx?shipCode=PR\">Carnival Pride<\/a>, was forbidden to depart from Baltimore by the U.S. Coast Guard and the cruise was canceled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">&bull; Passengers on another Carnival ship, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carnival.com\/cms\/fun\/ships\/carnival_glory\/default.aspx?shipCode=GL\">Glory<\/a>, were issued refunds because the Norfolk (Virginia) cruise terminal is behind a flood gate that closed on the weekend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">&bull; Eight other Carnival ships on the East Coast were forced to delay departures or arrivals and skip or change ports for other stops, or add an extra sea day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">&bull; Three other Norwegian ships were affected&#8230;the <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.ncl.com\/ship\/gem\/overview\">Gem<\/a> is sitting out in calmer Atlantic waters until the hurricane passes, which could turn a 9-day cruise into 12, while the <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.ncl.com\/ship\/dawn\/overview\">Dawn<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.ncl.com\/cruise-ship\/sky\/overview\">Sky<\/a> also shuffled departures and ports.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">&bull; The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.princess.com\/learn\/ships\/ep\/index.html\">Emerald Princess<\/a> escaped rough seas by stopping in Port Saguenay (Quebec) instead of Bar Harbor (Maine), and three other Princess ships changed itineraries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">&bull; Four Royal Caribbean ships &mdash; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalcaribbean.com\/findacruise\/ships\/class\/ship\/home.do;jsessionid=0000e6-ggTfQ6kfyclDTOkqf1pA:12hdhuaq2?br=R&amp;shipClassCode=VI&amp;shipCode=EN\">Enchantment<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalcaribbean.com\/findacruise\/ships\/class\/ship\/home.do;jsessionid=0000qtES-D1nOA67492SXQkNWGr:13hldcill?br=R&amp;shipClassCode=RD&amp;shipCode=JW\">Jewel<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalcaribbean.com\/findacruise\/ships\/class\/ship\/home.do?shipClassCode=SS&amp;shipCode=MJ&amp;br=R\">Majesty<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.royalcaribbean.com\/findacruise\/ships\/class\/ship\/home.do;jsessionid=00002HsUNbCAuk-UVjZnITQ_Ox1:13hldcill?br=R&amp;shipClassCode=SS&amp;shipCode=MN\">Monarch of the Seas<\/a> &mdash; also changed schedules or added sea days to escape Sandy&#39;s wrath.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Blessed with modern technology, cruise ships are almost always able to escape hurricanes. This one, because of its mushrooming size and force, may turn out to be the exception.
