Alaska, anyone? Alaska, everyone?<\/p>\n

Holland America<\/a> plans to increase its departures to the 49th state by 8.5 per cent in 2013. \"\"<\/a>That means, if they sell out, Holland America will take 6 per cent more people to Alaska next year.<\/p>\n

This is a good sign for a state that was suffering from an oppressive head tax that threatened to slice into the tourist dollars that come with cruise ships. It's also a sign that either cruise passengers haven't yet had enough of the wonders of Alaska<\/a>, or those who have never seen it are getting on board.<\/p>\n

The same seven ships will service Alaska from Pacific Northwest ports, they'll just do it longer and more often. Five ships will take the Inside Passage from\/to Vancouver<\/a>, and two from\/to Seattle<\/a>. They're all 7-day cruises, traveling either north or south, and when you add them all up it comes to 139.<\/p>\n

Holland America is just one of the players going north to Alaska, one of 16 cruise lines that do this beautiful, natural state. Princess<\/a> is often regarded as the industry leader, in part because it has invested in its own infrastructure. Both lines have seven ships dedicated to the destination, but when you compare the days sailing to-or-from Alaska in 2013, the scoreboard looks like this:<\/p>\n
