A former cruise ship captain from California, Paul Leyda, was interviewed extensively on the show. In a story that appeared in a Bay Area newspaper, the Times-Herald, he provided this perspective:

“They hit a rock, so, ipso facto, they got too close. Experience has taught me something. Don’t jump to conclusions until you have the facts, and we don’t have those yet until the Italian government finishes its investigation.

“This was a bad and horrible accident, but every day there are thousands and thousands of passengers embarking and disembarking from cruises and ferries [without incident]. But it’s like airline crashes, it must be kept in perspective.”

At a time when Internet jokes about the deadly crash and the Concordia captain are plentiful, it’s important to listen to this voice of reason.

DAILY DEAL:
Carnival Destiny
5 nights
April 16
Miami (return): Nassau, Half Moon Cay, Grand Turk
Inside $379
www.carnival.com

In the old and never-ending wake of the Costa Concordia accident, there is a new perspective that’s worth acknowledging.
